'Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry' Review

Art is more than simply for the purpose of aesthetics.

I finally got around to watching the documentary "Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry" and felt enlightened to encourage others to watch it too when you get the chance. A story of celebrating the courageous efforts to stepping out from the norms to speak out for the suppressed, Ai Weiwei (amongst all the other persecuted activists who gave their life to making progress in this effort), despite living in constant fear for his life, made the conscientious decision to take this risk in order to bear his part in the burden of social responsibility as a Chinese citizen.

This kind of courage makes you count your blessings genuinely when individual rights are more than not taken for granted in such liberal Western societies and even more so, makes you appreciate more of how freedom of speech should not be taken lightly as an afterthought of an absolute right. In extension, it really makes you re-think about how you can (and should) do your part in harnessing artistic expression, social media, and liberalism to leverage your social responsibility as an individual.

Read more here about some of Ai Weiwei's brilliant quotes from the documentary that will leave an imprint on you to deeply ponder about what it means to truly dedicate your life to fighting for individualism and exposing systemic injustice when your life is put on the line in constant jeopardy.
